Strudel Sergeants

Corps Information

Director: StrudelMarchingArts

Division: World Class

Location: Estes Park, CO

Bio: The Strudel Sergeants formed out of a love of Austrian bakery desserts, mountainous terrain, and of course those little twiddly noise machines called bugles. The corps trains and practices exclusively in high elevation winter conditions, making it the world's least-OSHA compliant voluntary music organization with several climate scientists and medical personnel on permanent staff.

Following the lives of a pair of Asian-American youngsters circa., 1942 as they wake one day to find their communities pulled apart by force and then stitched back together within a sparse concentration camp in southern Colorado. Their innocence slowly stripped away by the harsh realities of racist government policies, they grow closer in their shared adversity and discover a terrifying truth: they have fallen in love.

They wake each day with purpose, surviving together in America, eventually being released from wrongful imprisonment. They defy norms and laws they believe to be wrong by choosing to live together after their shared experience during the war. The Civil Liberties Act of 1988 is eventually signed to provide meager reparations to former incarcerees, and the boys (now aged men) adopt a teen orphaned daughter whom they raise with care before they each pass away quietly, having lived their entire lives as 'outsiders' within their own country and communities.

Their grieving daughter, grown and married herself, adds a final promising observation to the story: her own teen daughter has just founded the first LGBTQ club at her local community center, making pride both a way of life and a theme of remembrance for her grandfather's sacrifices.
